A woman died and three other people were injured in a crash caused by a motorist travelling the wrong-way on the Long Beach Freeway on Friday night.
The crash happened about 10 p.m. Friday when the suspect drove up the southbound exit at Broadway and drove north in the southbound lanes, colliding with the other vehicles near Sixth Street, Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department said.
The driver of the car that was hit had to be pulled out by firefighters and taken to a hospital. That person was listed in critical condition, authorities said.
Another person, in a third vehicle, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The person believed responsible for the crash, who was not identified, tried to run away, but was caught by witnesses who held him until police arrived, Pratt said. He was taken to a hospital for non-lifethreatening injuries before being booked into jail, police said.
All southbound lanes of the freeway were closed following the crash.
