Raul Alvarez Jr., 16, arrived at Pullman’s Gym Thursday night for a practice session. Wearing full protective gear, Alvarez was practicing with another boxer when he began complaining of pain. He was taken to the hospital, but died an hour after arrival. John Cadiz Klemack reports from Burbank for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on July 27, 2012.

A 16-year-old boxer died Thursday night after what police described as "light sparring" at a gym in Burbank.

The boy reported that he was in pain after sparring -- often a short practice session with an opponent in the ring -- at Pullman's gym in the 4300 block of West Magnolia Avenue. He was transported at about 7 p.m. to St. Joseph's Medical Center.

Burbank police officers, at the medical center on an unrelated call, were alerted to the boy's arrival. The boy became unconscious at the hospital, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to a Burbank police statement.

The coroner's office and Burbank police are investigating the case.

A sign posted in the gym's window indicated it would be closed Friday.
