Chase Standoff Shuts Down 110 Freeway

A police pursuit that ended in a bizarre standoff on the northbound 110 shut down lanes on both sides of the freeway Saturday night.

The standoff began when the driver stopped facing southbound on northbound lanes near the Martin Luther King Jr. exit in the Exposition Park area.

Drivers stuck behind the the 38-year-old suspect's car were instructed to leave their vehicles on the freeway as the standoff continued at 10:50 p.m.

The Los Angeles Police Department's Newton Division said they began pursuing the driver as a DUI suspect. He was traveling at 20 mph at times, police said.

The driver halted on lanes, and then hopped in and out of the car, all while smoking and chatting on his cellphone.

Officers deployed nonlethal rounds, but they were ineffective.

A massive backup stretched for miles on both sides of the 110 Freeway.

The driver was taken into custody at 11:15 p.m.

Lanes on both side of the freeway were reopened by the California Highway Patrol at 11:39 p.m.
