Deputies arrested two armed gang members who led them on a pursuit and carjacked a bystander Tuesday, a Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant said.
At 9:17 p.m., deputies pulled over a car that was associated with a missing person. When they approached the car, they noticed that the driver was wearing a bulletproof vest and wielding a handgun, said Sgt. Steve Owen.
The deputies retreated and the suspects fled. Deputies pursued them for about three minutes into a residential area, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran toward an apartment complex, Owen said.
The suspect who was wearing a bulletproof vest ran through the complex and emerged on nearby Avenue I, where he carjacked a bystander, Owen said.
Deputies tried, unsuccessfully, to negotiate with the suspect as he held the victim at gunpoint. They ended up using a Taser to incapacitate and disarm the suspect, Owen said.
The suspects' names were not immediately released. However, news footage shows two heavily tattooed men with shaved heads.
Deputies recovered two guns, ammunition and the bulletproof vest from the scene.
