A man was shot and killed in South El Monte when a shooter allegedly pulled up to his car and opened gunfire Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the 9000 block of Garvey Avenue. Both the victim's car and the alleged gunman's car were traveling eastbound on Garvey Avenue when the gunman started shooting. After the man was struck by gunfire, his car collided into the three other cars as he continued on Garvey Avenue.
"The cars were side-by-side when the shooting took place and the suspect vehicle made a u-turn and fled westbound," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. Holly Francisco said.
A Good Samaritan who was working nearby tried to help the victim, who had been traveling in a black sedan with a female passenger when he was struck by gunfire.
"She just kept saying, 'He's my boyfriend, he's my boyfriend,' and I was just trying to calm her down," the Good Samaritan said. "But I didn't know everything until she started spilling it to me."
The female passenger was not injured. The male victim was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.
The shooter fled in a dark colored vehicle and had not been located as of Tuesday night. Officials have no knowledge of any possible motive. A weapon has not been recovered.
