Family members of a driver wanted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Santa Ana urged him to called police, leading to the man's arrest after the Monday morning crash, according to authorities.
A pedestrian was killed in the 5 a.m. crash the 500 block of Euclid Street, a major north-south street in the heart of Santa Ana. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was identified as 85-year-old Rudolph Joseph, of Santa Ana. The suspect was identified as Michael Truong Pham, 33, of Garden Grove.
Witnesses told police they saw Joseph on the ground in the middle of the street. The driver had already left the scene, police said.
Relatives of Pham's advised him to notify police, according to authorities. After he contacted officers about 20 minutes after the crash, police responded to the family's home. The man was brought back to the crash site to speak with investigators.
He was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony hit and run.
Correction: Police initially identified the victim as Joseph Rudolph.
