A Los Angeles Police Department patrol car that was responding to a report of a man with a deadly weapon at a convenience store near the USC campus collided with a pickup Sunday night, injuring two officers and the truck driver.
The officers were responding to the call in South Los Angeles with lights and siren activated when the crash occurred near Jefferson Boulevard and Western Avenue. The officers were eastbound on Jefferson Boulevard and headed to a report of a man who attempted to take a customer's keys at a convenience store near the USC campus.
That weapon turned out to be a screwdriver, police said.
Gates on the southwest side of campus were closed after the report. It was not immediately clear whether a subject was apprehended in connection with the assault.
The officers were treated and released from a hospital. The pickup driver remained hospitalized Monday morning with what authorities described as minor injuries.
Both vehicles were towed from the location Monday morning.
The injury crash comes after the deaths of three on-duty LAPD officers killed in traffic collisions this year.
