Nursing Home Fire Forces Dozens to Evacuate

A 2-alarm fire in Newport Beach forced dozens of residents to evacuate from a nursing home Sunday.

The fire at Flagship Healthcare Center began in the building's basement and forced approximately 50 patients to be evacuated, while others were told to shelter in place, said Newport Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Nick Stocks.

After Newport Beach firefighters responded to an alarm that went off in the building, their concern was leaving the patients outside in the heat, Stocks said. Because of that, crews were "aggressive" in attacking the blaze.

"Once we were able to knock down the fire and clear the first floor living space, we were able to then move those potential patients back in," Stocks said. No injuries were reported, he said.
