Parents Demand Crossing Guards After Fatal Upland Hit-and-Run

Parents in Upland were demanding safer routes for their children the day after an 11-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run while walking to school.

Isaiah Dobine was walking to Cabrillo Elementary School around 8 a.m. Thursday when authorities said he was hit by a Jeep Cherokee that fled the scene.

As a makeshift memorial of balloons and flowers for Dobine continued to grow Friday, parents carried signs reading “Slow Down!” as a volunteer crossguard safely led students across the street near the elementary school.

There have been no crossguards near the school for nearly five years.

“This is what happens when we do that,” parent Valerie Pineda said. “We end up losing our children, and there’s no need for it.”

Ismael Nieves donned an orange safety vest Friday morning after hearing about Dobine’s death.

“It’s not what you love, it’s what you do - how you show your love for the community,” Nieves said. “This is how I show my love to the community.”

Phone calls from NBC4 to the school’s superintendent were not returned.

Fliers were also being handed out for a march up Euclid Avenue on Saturday to petition for safer streets for students in the area.

Dobine was walking near Arrow Highway and Benson Avenue when he was struck. Upland police later arrested Jason Fehr, 25, shown at right, in connection with the hit-and-run.

A memorial fund for Isaiah has been stated and his family asked anyone who wishes to donate to visit his YouCaring page at www.youcaring.com/shelton.
