Garden Grove police are searching for a suspect who ran his car over an motorcycle officer during a routine traffic stop Wednesday.
Marcos Gonzalez, 28, was stopped around 9:33 a.m. in the parking lot of a strip mall in the 13000 block of Brookhurst for not wearing a seat belt, police said.
"When they pulled into this parking lot the officer became suspicious of the mannerisms of the person driving the car. The guy was acting very nervous and the officers thought something else might be amiss so he asked for an additional officer," said Lt. Jeff Nightengale.
While the officer waited for backup, he patted down the suspect to check for weapons.
"At one point the suspect decided he wasn't going to go along with the program so he decided to get back in his car," Nightengale said.
The officer followed and a fight broke out between the two as the suspect jumped in the driver's seat.
"The officer gets knocked over when the suspect puts the car in reverse and when the suspect tries to flee the parking lot, he runs over the officer," Nightengale said.
The officer sustained moderate injuries and may have two broken legs, police said. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover.
Gonzoles fled the scene. He's described as 5'8, 220 pounds, wearing some kind of soft cast on one leg. Police described the car as a Green 2002 four-door Infiniti Q35 with tinted windows an no license plate.
Police are asking for the public's help to find Gonzoles. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Garden Grove Police department at 714-741-5800.
