Police: Teen Arrested in Shooting Near Santa Ana High School Has Gang Affiliations

A 14-year-old student is suspected of shooting a fellow high-schooler over a gang rivalry.

Investigators are continuing to build their case against a 14-year-old documented gang member who allegedly shot a fellow Santa Ana High School student last week.

Santa Ana Police spokesman Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said Saturday that the case had been submitted to the Orange County District Attorney's office and police are hoping the boy will be prosecuted as an adult.

The 14-year-old, who remained unidentified because of his age, was arrested Thursday afternoon while at school.

"They got him out of the classroom," Bertagna said of the high-school freshman.

The boy was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

He's accused of shooting a 16-year-old student in the stomach just a block from campus on April 27.

The victim was walking away from school with a friend when the shooter ran in front of them and then turned and opened fire, police said last week. The boy who was shot tried to run back to school but collapsed in an alley, Bertagna said.

The pair had an ongoing rivalry due to gang affiliations, the police department said in a press release Friday afternoon.

Investigators had a search warrant for the suspect's home to try to find the handgun used in the crime, but Bertagna couldn't say Saturday whether the weapon had been found.

The shooting victim remained in the hospital Friday in grave condition, Bertagna said.

The alleged shooter had been booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall.
