Gunman Sought in 91 Freeway Shooting That Injured 2 Men

Officials asked for the public's help in finding the occupants of a 2003 grey Honda Accord who fired shots

Gunfire struck two men on a freeway in Bellflower Thursday night and authorities are searching for others wanted in the shooting, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The two victims were driving westbound on the 91 Freeway at Bellflower Boulevard about 8:40 p.m. when multiple rounds were fired into the driver’s side by occupants of a grey 2003 Honda Accord, according to a CHP release.

One victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is in critical condition; the other was struck in the arm, CHP Officer Tatiana Sauquillo said.

The victims, who were driving a 2013 Chrysler 300, have been identified as Dominic Fonseca and Leronze Hensley. They were both transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, the release stated.

After the gunfire, the Chrysler 300 -- with three bullet holes in the driver's side-- crashed into a sound wall along the right side of the freeway, footage from the scene showed. The Honda Accord swerved left and crashed into the center divider, CHP Capt. Daniel Minor said.

Authorities are searching for the people who were traveling in the Honda, which is registered to an address in Bell Gardens, Minor said.

CHP officials originally said two men were wanted in the shooting, but the CHP release later stated that authorities could not confirm the number of occupants in the Honda.

A witness told investigators the men in the Honda opened fire on those in the Chrysler, then made off in a third vehicle, Minor said.

Earlier reports from a CHP spokesman suggested the shooters were traveling on foot when they opened fire, but that was later deemed incorrect.

Traffic along the freeway was snarled for miles, as seen below, while authorities combed the lanes for evidence.

All lanes of the westbound 91 Freeway except the high-occupancy vehicle lane were closed a little more than four hours before reopening at about 1 a.m., according to the CHP.

The connector between the southbound 605 and westbound 91 freeways also reopened about 1 a.m.
