A reassuring sight arrived Tuesday ta Van Nuys Airport -- two "Super Scoopers" that might offer some comfort to Southern California residents amid soaring temperatures and high fire danger.
Each plane can scoop up more than 1,600 gallons of water for a single water drop. The planes will be ready for firefighting service on Thursday.
The planes come to Southern California from Canada, complete with a staff of pilots and mechanics. This is the 18th year they have been made available for local firefighting. Their initial deployment will last 90 days, with the possibility of an extension if the need arises.
They arrived Tuesday from Quebec. The planes will be formally introduced next week.
