A sinkhole opened up in a Torrance street Thursday, partially swallowing up a trash truck.
The driver had just picked up a load at Riviera Elementary School at 365 Paseo De Arena and was backing out of a driveway about 2:10 p.m. when the street collapsed into the hole, which was opened by a possible storm drain issue and not a broken main, according to Torrance Fire Department Assistant Chief Carl Besanceney.
The 5-foot-deep hole was about 20 feet by 10 feet, "just enough to fit a trash truck," Besanceney said.
Torrance police and personnel from the city's public works and street department were at the scene assessing the situation.
In the meantime, all lanes of Via Del Collado and Paseo De Arena in that area were closed to traffic and the public was advised to use alternate routes.
