The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Orange Avenue between Walnut Avenue and Orange Avenue, about five miles from LBCC's main campus, said Marlene Arrona of the Long Beach Police Department.
Several people began arguing on the campus before one man ran away, police said.
Officers asked him to show them what was in his backpack before he led them on a chase through campus, including through a classroom full of students, police said.
Officers then heard a gunshot and returned fire, striking the man in the leg, police said. The alleged gunman was then taken into custody.
Police found a gun at the scene but did not say where or what kind.
