Dangers of High Heels

Tips on how to cut down on risk of damage to your foot

Beauty knows no pain, goes the saying, which is part of the reason high heels remain so popular among women. The pain comes because when you wear high heels, you put all the pressure in the front part of your foot, and it makes you lean forward, impacting your knees and back.

Wearing high heels too often can have long term consequences:

* Bunions, lumps that develop on the joint of your big toe that sometimes have to be removed by surgery.

* Heel Spurs

* Plantar Fasciitis, which is inflammation of the thick connective tissue on the sole of the foot. High heels can also lead to a shortening of your Achilles Tendon.

* Knee Pain

* Back Pain

This doesn't mean you can't ever wear high heels again, but you can be selective and wear them only when necessary, on special occasions.

For everyday wear, it is much safer to choose flats and square heels. Also you can use shoe inserts or orthotics to give your arch some extra support. At the first sign of pain, take off your shoes and ice your foot.
