The fates of RMS Titanic, the colossal ocean liner that tragically met with an iceberg in April of 1912, and then proceeded to sail on into the myths and legends of history (and a little James Cameron film, of course), and the Queen Mary, another ocean liner built much later and now permanently docked, seem forever entwined. In fact, we've never been at the Long Beach landmark without the subject of the Titanic coming up among our party, if only because strolling along one of the Queen's wood-lined decks, in the historic, seafaring setting, always brings that legendary, and sadly lost, ship to mind.
The Titanic Historical Society certainly appreciates the symmetry as well, and is holding its 2009 convention at the Queen Mary. The event-packed three-day to-do includes a full schedule of Titanic scholars speaking on a variety of topics, a cocktail reception, tours, walks, brunch, and a Sunday memorial in remembrance of those lost on that cold, north Atlantic night back in 1912. We're sure that both those who are thoroughly schooled in every bit of Titanic lore, as well as people simply interested in the story, the Molly Brown-Astor tales from the ship, and the grand feel of the era, will both find plenty that appeals during the grand weekend.
