A Rancho Palos Verdes home was left with a gaping hole in its roof after a car crash landed on it overnight.

Joann Killeen said she and her husband were about to have dinner in their home Sunday evening when they were interrupted by a loud crash.

"That was a loud sound," Killeen said. "I thought it was a gas explosion."

The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. Sunday at their home on the 28000 block of Santona Drive. There, debris remains scattered throughout the property.

At least one person was transported to a hospital after a vehicle crashed through the roof of a home in Rancho Palos Verdes. As seen on the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2024.

"Everything here has to be replaced," Killeen said.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the driver of a Mercedes lost control on Granvia Altamira Road and went over an embankment right before crashing into the home. The driver, who was described as an elderly woman, was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

"I know from my training, I knew I needed to keep the woman in the car awake," Killeen said. "It took them about 45 minutes to safely remove her ..."

It is unclear what caused the driver to lose control of the car.
