The Feasters were off duty on July 18, but just because National Caviar Day fell on a weekend doesn’t mean you have go without roe. Here are six of the city’s best places to find fish eggs. Some are more prized than others. In Santa Monica, you’ll find ahi crudo with minced pineapple, cucumbers and trout roe. A Studio City sushi obsessive prepares salmon roe sushi. In Koreatown, spicy crab soup comes in a bubbling cauldron with orange roe still attached to the scissor-cuts of “swimming crab.” At a La Cienega pleasure palace, tiny cones are filled with dill cream cheese and topped with salmon roe. A leading Monterey Park dim sum emporium tops pork siu mai and shark’s fin & red clam dumplings with tobiko, flying fish roe. Return to West Hollywood if you like sturgeon roe on top of steak tartare “spring rolls,” crispy eggs, in a dip or by the tin.
