Memorial Day in LA

CANOGA PARK MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Now celebrating its 21st year, this march steps off at the intersection of Sherman Way and Owensmouth. Flyovers, horses, autos, and a USO show are all on the bill. 11AM

LETTERS FROM THE FRONT: It has honored Memorial Day for well over a century -- 120 years, in fact -- and for the 2009 holiday the Los Angeles National Cemetery presents "Letters from the Front" as well as a flyover by Condor Squadron. Music, salutes (both rifle and cannon), and letters read by actors and others are part of the moving day. 10:30AM

A DAY IN THE PARK: A celebration with an old-time vibe, A Day in the Park at Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys Memorial Park boasts a big-band concert and a tribute to veterans. It's free -- so nice -- and there's dancing, also so nice. The four-hour party kicks off at 2PM.

BARBECUE AND FILM: The Cinefamily at Silent Movie is doing the ol' holiday barbecue, but with a twist: attendees will be shown snippets of rare movies, and then the whole crowd will vote on which film will be shown in its entirety. We like having a vote. 6PM.
