NBC4 Awards Scholarships at Annual Braille Challenge Competition

NBC4 Reporter Patrick Healy served as Master of Ceremonies for The Braille Challenge awards ceremony on June 18, 2016, which welcomed the top 50 students for the National Braille Challenge Finals Competition in Los Angeles.  NBC4 Southern California also sponsors two categories at the competition.

The event celebrated the best braille readers and writers age six to 19 who gather from across the U.S. and Canada for the 16th Annual Braille Challenge® finals. Hosted by Braille Institute, the unique competition is designed to motivate students by emphasizing their study of braille while rewarding their success with fun and challenging local and national events.

More than 1,100 students participated in one of nearly 50 local and regional events. Following this first regional phase, the 50 contestants with the highest scores competed in a second national finals phase at the Los Angeles headquarters of the Braille Institute.

The Braille Challenge offers students a chance to compete in five categories: reading comprehension, braille spelling, charts and graphs reading, proofreading and braille speed and accuracy.  NBC4 provides scholarships to the winners of the reading comprehension and spelling categories.
