A 70-year-old man died Sunday after he was severely cut by his boat's propeller in Newport Beach, according to authorities.
The accident was reported to the Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol at 2:52 p.m. as passengers aboard his large double-decker boat tried to save their captain, Sheriff's Lt. Steve Gil told the Orange County Register.
The injury happened after the man climbed into the water for a swim close to the open waters near the jetty, Gil told the Register.
To try and get him into the boat quicker, someone backed the boat toward him, and the man was cut by the boat's propeller, according to Gil.
The fatally injured man was pulled on board his boat by people who then tried to give him CPR, Gil said. But the man was pronounced dead at the Coast Guard dock by paramedics from the Newport Beach Fire Department, the paper reported.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in this accident, Gil said.
