A man was critically injured in a shooting involving federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Wednesday night in San Bernardino, police said.
The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. in the area of North F and West 4th streets, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.
What led up to the shooting was unclear. Initial reports said a man in a silver Mercedes was driving directly towards the ATF agents. The agents, "fearing for their lives," shot at the car, police said.
The driver was hospitalized for critical injuries. His two passengers were not struck by gunfire, police said.
The ATF agents were not injured in the incident.
