Body Found Inside Burning Car in Chatsworth

A body was found in a burned car in Chatsworth and now police are trying to figure out if the victim died in the fire or from something else.

A body was found Sunday in the backseat of a burning car in Chatsworth, and both death and arson investigations were underway, according to authorities.

Firefighters were called to a car fire in the 20600 block of Celtic Avenue shortly after 1:16 a.m., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. That is in a residential neighborhood -- a cul de sac street -- near the 118 Freeway at Mason Street.

Firefighters put out the fire and then found the body in the back of the burned out car, according to Los Angeles police spokeswoman Officer Norma Eisenman.

It was not immediately clear whether the body is that of a male or female, Eisenman said.

Humphrey said arson investigators were still at the scene trying to determine if the fire was arson. A death investigation was underway by the LAPD and the coroner's office.
