Ventura County

Coroner Yet to Release Names of Airplane Crash Victims

A small plane crashed into trees and caught on fire Saturday afternoon, killing the pilot and a friend. Jane Yamamoto reports for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Medical examiners in Ventura County Sunday continued to identify and find family members of the two people when a small experimental airplane, registered in Palmdale, crashed Saturday into a shed near Santa Paula.

The single-engine, home-built Vans RV6A crashed around 2:10 p.m. Saturday in the vicinity of South Mountain Road and 12th Street, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

"The plane struck an unoccupied shed," Gregor said. "It caught fire after crashing."

The plane's federal registration number indicated that it was registered out by a person or company in Palmdale.

Two people were dead at the scene, the Ventura County Fire Department tweeted.

The pilot's wife Lori Dopler told NBC4 that she was supposed to be on board with him, but she stayed home to take care of her mom who was visiting.

She added that her husband Ted Dopler was an accomplished pilot and a 60-year-old flying enthusiast.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.

NBC4's Jane Yamamoto contributed to this report.
