Crash on 15 Freeway Sparks Brush Fire in Cajon Pass

Fire crews fought the flames from the ground and deployed air tankers to fight it from the sky.

A tour bus crash along the 15 Freeway sparked a brush fire in the Cajon Pass and prompted a partial closure of the busy roadway Saturday afternoon.

Just before 1 p.m., the bus and another vehicle were involved in a collision on the northbound lanes of the freeway, a fire quickly flared and advanced to the brush along the roadway.

It spread from 3-to-5 acres at a "rapid rate of speed" to 10 acres, jumping Highway 138, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured by an oxygen tank that exploded, officials said. Her injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Fire crews fought the flames from the ground and deployed air tankers to fight it from the sky.

They were able to "make good progress" and hold the blaze at 10 acres.

Saturday's fire is the near the same location that an apocalyptic fire broke out last month, paralyzing traffic and sending trapped motorists fleeing down the busy roadway on foot.
