Year-Old Human Remains Found in Tick Fire Burn Area

Deputies do not believe the remains, found in Santa Clarita, are related to the Tick Fire. As seen on NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019.

Human skeletal remains were discovered Saturday in an area burned by the Tick Fire but detectives believe they had been there for about a year, and were discovered because the fire exposed them, authorities said.

A public works employee "stumbled across" the remains about 11:30 a.m. around Sand Canyon Road and Thompson Ranch Drive, Deputy Morgan Arteaga of the Sheriff's Information Bureau said.

Sheriff's homicide detectives responded to the scene, she said.

They determined the remains had been there about one year, concealed in brush that was burned away by the Tick Fire, Arteaga said. It was too soon to know whether the person was a homicide victim, she said.
