A Riverside County sheriff's K-9 is recovering at her handler’s home after being accidentally shot in the paw by a deputy, officials said Tuesday.
The dog, Tessa, was shot June 13 when deputies were searching for a man who had escaped custody near Lake Elsinore on Friday, according to a release by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Shawn Redding, 45, escaped after being arrested for multiple outstanding warrants, sheriff's officials said.
Tessa was helping search for Redding with her handler when a pit bull jumped out of a home's open window and attacked her, officials said.
Another deputy shot and killed the pit bull, but wounded Tessa in the process.
One round hit Tessa’s right paw and she had to be taken to a veterinary hospital for emergency treatment, officials said.

Officials said Tessa’s recovery is promising and she should be able to return to work.
Redding was arrested Saturday and booked into the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Southwest Detention Center, according to the department's inmate locator.
