Driver Faces Charges After Killing a 13-year-old Girl

Malibu High School student killed while walking home

A motorist ran into and killed a 13-year-old Malibu girl at Point Dume and faces homicide charges, according to deputies.

The girl, Emily Rose Shane, lived not far away from the spot where she was hit by a car on Pacific Coast Highway at Heathercliff Drive at 5:11 p.m., Saturday.

Shane was a student at nearby Malibu High School, according to acquaintances.

Sina Khankhanian, 26, was driving a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer that allegedly struck the girl as she was walking home along the right shoulder of the coastal route. His car hit a power pole and overturned after striking the child, said Deputy Mark Pope.

Because homicide detectives have been assigned the case, sheriff's deputies could not disclose details about the crash, or explain why the man was booked on suspicion of homicide charges.

The scene of the crash is next to a shopping center, where bus stops and other pedestrian magnets are located on a section of highway without sidewalks.
