Man suspected of DUI killed in Brea police shooting near 57 Freeway

A man who was suspected of DUI was shot and killed by Brea Police Department officers Thursday evening near the 57 Freeway.

The officers were notified at 4:42 p.m. Thursday about a possible DUI driver in the area of Lambert Road and the Orange (57) Freeway, according to a Brea Police Department statement.

Officers found a vehicle matching the description of the DUI driver’s against a retaining wall in westbound lanes of Lambert Road east of the freeway, police said.

“Officers made contact with the driver,'' the statement said. “A short time later, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff.''

Video from the scene showed police patrol cars cornered a dark-colored SUV with possible bullet holes to the window.

Details about whether the man was armed and what led to the shooting were not immediately available.
