Student-Filled Bus Catches Fire on Freeway, All Escape Safely

High-school students on a field trip had to evacuate a burning bus

Students were able to get off the bus safely after it caught fire on an LA freeway Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016.

A bus headed from Fullerton to Los Angeles caught on fire Saturday morning on the 710 freeway, carrying 40 high-school students who were able to get out safely.

California Highway Patrol said the students were on a field trip to Cal State Los Angeles from Fullerton when the driver told them that the bus was on fire.

An adult on the bus also said a driver that passed them told them gas was coming out of the back of the bus.

After stopping on the side of the road near the city of Commerce and exiting the bus unharmed, the students were transferred onto another bus.

Traffic on the northbound 710 freeway was stopped by officers who issued a SigAlert for an hour and a half.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
