One person died when a small plane crashed and caught fire in a lettuce field near a Southern California airport on Tuesday, authorities said.
Emergency crews responded around 12:30 p.m. to reports of a plane down near Camarillo airport, said Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Brian McGrath.
Firefighters found the aircraft engulfed in flames and quickly extinguished the blaze, McGrath said. There was one confirmed fatality, he said.
The pilot was the only person aboard the single-engine, homebuilt BD-5, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.
Television news showed the plane upside down in the field about 55 miles (88 kilometers) west of downtown Los Angeles.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.
