Disney Dollars, which have long been a valuable collector's item and form of in-house currency, are being discontinued.
The brightly-colored bills, decorated with the faces of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other characters, will no longer be sold as of Saturday, according to park spokeswoman Melissa Britt.
Since 1987, the currency has been sold and accepted at Disneyland Parks, Walt Disney World and the Disney Store just like real cash. However, the increasing popularity of gift cards have led to the end of an era, Britt said.
Disney Dollars currently in circulation will still be honored.
Created by former president of Disneyland Resort Jack Lindquist, the bills have been sold in $1, $5 and $10 denominations. A $50 bill was created for the 50th anniversary only.
