A 63-year-old man who died on a hike with a group Monday in the Malibu Hills suffered a heart attack, the coroner's office said.
The hiker was identified by the coroner's office Thursday as Jeffrey Sherman, of Thousand Oaks. He was hiking with others who suffered heat exhaustion and dehydration among a group of 10 hikers the Malibu Hills, the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff's Department said.
The 911 call came in at 2:10 p.m., fire department Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores said. The search and rescue team responded to the area in the Malibu Hills near Kanan Dume and Edison roads.
Flores said the 10 hikers had split off and gotten separated in the hills.
Sherman had entered Zuma Canyon's Backbone Trail, along with companions, and ran out of water. Several people attempted to help the man, but he did not survive.
Five others were flown out of the canyon and treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Rescue teams responded to four different distress calls on Monday, rescuing a total of eight hikers.
