The Los Angeles County Library was named a finalist Monday for the 2019 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

Thirty museums and libraries from across the country made the list of finalists announced by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It's the second year in a row LA County Library has been named a finalist.

Finalists are chosen for their noteworthy and innovative contributions to their local communities, according to the IMLS.

"The 30 National Medal finalists showcase the tremendous ability of libraries and museums to serve as vital community resources," IMLS Director Kathryn Matthew said. "The Institute of Museum and Library Services is honored to recognize these leading institutions."

LA County Library Director Skye Patrick said the institution was "thrilled" to be back on the list of finalists.

"Libraries are much more than books, and LA County Library strives to improve the lives of all Los Angeles County residents through our many programs focused on lifelong learning, bridging the digital divide, cultivating creativity and serving as a gathering place for community engagement," Patrick said. "We are honored to be recognized alongside so many tremendous institutions doing truly impactful work."

The only other California institutions to make the list of finalists were the Barona Cultural Center and Museum and the New Children's Museum, both in San Diego County.

The National Medal is the highest honor awarded to museums and libraries around the country, according to the IMLS. The organization will honor the National Medal award winners June 12 in Washington, D.C. The IMLS awarded the National Medal to five museums and five libraries last year.
