A 26-year-old man was charged Friday with assaulting two women a day apart this week at Cal State Northridge.
Criminal proceedings against Peter Wei were suspended after a defense attorney declared a doubt about the Northridge man's mental competency, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
Wei had been set to be arraigned on two felony counts of assault to commit a felony, including rape, sodomy or oral copulation, and one misdemeanor count each of battery and resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer, He allegedly assaulted one woman near a parking lot on campus Tuesday and another victim on Wednesday, according to prosecutors.
Wei was arrested Wednesday by Cal State Northridge police and had been jailed since then on $100,000 bail, but his bail was increased to $1 million at the prosecution's request.
He could face a maximum sentence of almost 13 years and six months in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the district attorney's office.
