Man Struck, Killed by Hit-and-Run Vehicle in South Los Angeles

A pedestrian was killed Wednesday morning in a hit-and-run crash in the Vermont Square area of Los Angeles and the driver was at large.

Officers responded to the intersection of 51st Street and Normandie Avenue about 1:25 a.m., where they located the victim, a man in his 30s or 40s, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said the victim was outside a crosswalk at the time he was struck.

"It's always traumatic when someone is hit and pronounced dead at the scene," LAPD South Traffic Division Officer Elaine Morales told reporters at the scene. "What's worse is when the driver does not remain at the scene ..."

A detailed description of the driver or vehicle was not immediately available.

The name of the victim was not immediately disclosed.
