A bizarre police pursuit ended with a masked man in custody on the sand in Venice Beach Saturday, after the driver led police up the 405 Freeway from Orange County through the South Bay before heading west to the ocean.
The pursuit started on the 405 Freeway near the 22 Freeway around 2:48 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said someone called and said a person was hanging out of the sunroof, acting recklessly.
Newschopper4 Bravo was over the chase around 3:25 p.m., after it had traveled north on the 405 Freeway through the South Bay and was just past Los Angeles International Airport.
The driver proceeded to take the 90 Freeway westbound and got onto Lincoln Boulevard northbound. After taking a left turn onto Venice Boulevard, the driver put on a mask and jumped out of the sunroof and sat on the roof of the vehicle while the car was in motion.
Then, the driver returned to the car and drove westbound on Venice Boulevard towards the Venice pier. The driver jumped out of the sedan and walked away from the car, before running away from officers on the Venice boardwalk.
The man continued his westbound journey and ran onto the sand, walking towards the water. While on the run, the man who was wearing what appeared to be a Joker mask even managed to stop by and help bury a man who was playing in the sand on the beach.
Eventually, police caught up with the masked man and surrounded the pursuit driver only feet away from the water. The masked man eventually surrendered to authorities, with a large crowd at the beach watching around 3:50 p.m.
The pursuit suspect was identified as Damik A. Disdier, 40, by the California Highway Patrol on Sunday.
