A Glimpse at What the Olympic Games Could Look Like in Los Angeles

Ever wonder what the Olympics would be like in Los Angeles?

Renderings of a modernized LA Memorial Coliseum and a temporary open-air aquatics facility for the 2024 Olympic Games were released Saturday by the Los Angeles 2024 candidature committee.

The two venues would be used for track and field, and three aquatic disciplines if the 2024 Games are held in Los Angeles.

"LA 2024 is now better placed than ever to deliver the ultimate personalized experience for athletes and every stakeholder of the Olympic Family," said Casey Wasserman, LA 2024 Chairman.

Both the Coliseum and the aquatics venue would be apart of LA 2024's proposed Downtown Cluster, which includes stadiums and arenas like Staples Center, Galen Center, Microsoft Theater and Los Angeles Football Club Stadium at Exposition Park.

The Coliseum was utilized as the venue for Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and track and field events during the 1932 and 1984 Games, the committee noted in a statement. USC will spend $270 million to upgrade the stadium's sports, training and media facilities, and to create new hospitality facilities starting in 2018.

The stadium would be transitioned temporarily from its use for football to athletics for the Olympics, and back for the collegiate football season. Warm-up and operations facilities would be located under a temporary athletics deck. After the Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony, the track surface would be removed so the stadium could be returned to USC shortly after.

"Bringing the sport back to an iconic and modernized LA Memorial Coliseum would provide all athletes with the perfect setting to perform their best and inspire new, young audiences around the globe to follow and participate in sport," said Stephanie Hightower, USA Track & Field President and IAAF Council Member.

Plans to transform USC's Dedeaux Field, which hosts USC's baseball team, into an open-air swimming venue were also released. Training facilities would be available at the two pools at pools at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center, site of the 1984 Olympic swimming competitions, according to the committee.

Exposition Park's new Los Angeles Football Club Stadium was initially supposed to house the aquatic center, the committee added. Now it would serve as the location for Olympic soccer matches.

"As part of its planning process and in consultation with international sports federations, LA 2024 will continue to consider venue adjustments prior to submitting its final deliverable to the IOC in February 2017," a release from the committee read.
