About 17 children and adults were taken to area hospitals Monday after swimming in an Arcadia public pool that was evacuated due to over-chlorination, but no one became seriously ill, a fire official said.
Dozens of children could be seen standing outside the empty pool in Arcadia County Park in the 400 block of S. Santa Anita Avenue as fire paramedics assessed patients at midday.
Those taken to Methodist Hospital in Arcadia and Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena were mostly children complaining of "burning of the eyes, coughing and difficulty breathing," said Arcadia Fire Department spokeswoman Beth Stogner.
"All are in stable condition," Stogner said about 2 p.m., adding they would be kept for observation for a few more hours.
The excess chemical was only in the water and posed no airborne threat, said Stogner.
A Los Angeles County Department of Health hazardous materials team will decide when the pool will reopen, she said.
In response to the pool problem, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich announced that he would introduce a motion Tuesday calling on the county Department of Parks and Recreation to inspect all county public pools and identify and remove any possible health threats.
