Arraignment in Attack Against Gay Men Postponed

Two men face assault and battery charges with a hate crime enhancement in a Halloween attack in Long Beach

An arraignment has been postponed for two suspects allegedly responsible for a brutal attack on two gay men in Long Beach on Halloween.

Marquise Lucas, 19, and Sierus Lamar Dunbar, 27, face assault and battery charges, with hate crime enhancements, at their scheduled Jan. 27 arraignment, prosecutors said.

The suspects allegedly attacked two men near the Gay and Lesbian Center of Greater Long Beach in front of several witnesses after 8 p.m. on Halloween, police said.

The attack started when the suspects allegedly called the victims names. When the victims took a picture of their attackers with a cellphone, the suspects allegedly knocked the men to the ground and punched and stomped them, police said.

The victims suffered moderate injuries.

The attacks prompted calls for a renewed community watch program and increased police patrols in the area.

The suspects were being held at the Los Angeles County Jail.
