Lanes on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway reopened Tuesday afternoon after a big rig fire forced an hours-long closure.
The truck caught fire about 11 a.m. near Eastern Avenue and the 710 Freeway, near Cal State Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The big rig driver was hauling appliances when he suddenly saw flames coming from the right side of the hood.
The driver pulled over and got out uninjured before the cab caught fire, CHP Officer Doris Peniche said.
The flaming truck came to a halt underneath an overpass, the sounds of tires popping described by witnesses as explosions.
Video from the scene showed crews cleaning up the spilled fuel and wreckage underneath the bridge. Engineers said the damage was not enough to hurt the bridge's structural strength.
All westbound lanes on the 10 Freeway were shut down until most reopened by 4:30 p.m. One remained closed for repair, according to the CHP.

Crews temporarily shut down two eastbound lanes, which reopened by 12:30 p.m.
