A local bakery is now facing tens of thousands of dollars in damages and lost merchandise after a break-in early this morning. The LA County Sheriff’s department said it happened while a street takeover was going on outside involving roughly 100 people. Macy Jenkins reports for the NBC4 News on Jan. 2, 2024.

A large group of thieves ransacked a Compton bakery early Tuesday after breaking into the business by ramming a vehicle into the entrance.

Security camera video showed a white Kia Soul reversing into Ruben's Bakery & Mexican Food. Dozens of people, many with their faces covered, streamed into the business, taking merchandise, lottery tickets, cash registers and other items.

The burglary was less than a mile from where about 100 people gathered at about 3 a.m. Tuesday for a street takeover near El Segundo Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue.

No arrests were reported.

"This is the livelihood for these people," said neighbor Loudes Gomez. "Mr. Ruben and his wife have been here for years."

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the sheriff's station at 310-605-6500.
