A California Highway Patrol officer was among three people injured Monday when a driver crashed into an ambulance involved in a response to an earlier injury crash on the 60 Freeway in Moreno Valley.
A crash investigation continued into Monday afternoon near Perris Boulevard.
A preliminary investigation indicated a driver traveling on the westbound 60 Freeway struck the ambulance and California Highway Patrol vehicle on a freeway exit ramp. Paramedics and the CHP officer were responding to an earlier crash at the location.
The driver of the car involved in the initial crash, reported at 7:20 a.m., was extricated from the Chevy Malibu. As paramedics were about the transport the victim in an ambulance, a second driver -- identified as a 20-year-old Buena Park woman -- in a Toyota sedan "lost control of her vehicle and drove across all lanes, causing (the car) to collide with an ambulance," according to a CHP news release.
The CHP officer and the Toyota driver suffered "moderate" injuries, said CHP Officer Steve Carapia. The driver involved in the initial crash and a family member who responded to the location suffered "major" injuries, according to the CHP.
None of the injuries are considered life-threatening, according to the CHP.
A photo from the Press-Enterprise showed an ambulance on its side and the Malibu with significant damage. A fire engine and fire utility truck, both of which were not occupied, also were damaged in the crash.
"During the holiday season, it is going to be wet," said Carapia. "We need to slow down."
