CHP Cracks Down on Dangerous Highway Trend

The CHP wants to crack down on a dangerous trend: motorcyclists speeding up and down Angeles Crest Highway.

There have been several deadly accidents on the mountain highway since it reopened in June.  It had been closed for more than a year so workers could repair parts of the highway damaged by storms.

The blind curves and steep cliffs are a recipe for disaster, especially when you factor in those who  treat the highway like a race course.

Numerous videos have popped up on YouTube showing motorcyclists speeding through the highway's dangerous twists and turns.  In one video, a motorcyclist crosses into oncoming traffic during a turn, passing between two cars before getting back in the right lane.

"It worries me sometimes, when I’m turning, how fast they’re going," said Karen Gilmour, who lives in the area.

Ever since the highway reopened, the CHP has been urging drivers to slow down.  Since many people continue to ignore the warnings, CHP officers will be out in force this Saturday, July 30.

"We’re going to have more than the usual amount of officers up on the Crest," said CHP Officer Kevin Denmon.

Officers will be looking for bikers passing illegally, especially around curves, as well as those who are speeding.
