The Los Angeles city Department of Recreation and Parks and the county's Office of Emergency Management has activated cooling centers to help people cope with near triple-digit temperatures forecast to continue Sunday.
Although Safer at Home orders are still in place during the coronavirus pandemic, Recreation and Parks officials said the centers will follow social distancing guidelines during hours of operation.
Although National Weather Service excessive heat warnings have been lifted for the Los Angeles area, temperatures are still expected to be in the upper 80s and 90s.
The city's cooling centers will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at:
- The Lincoln Heights Senior Center, 2323 Workman St., 323-225-9339;
Mid-Valley Senior Center at the Sepulveda Recreation Center, 8825 Kester Ave., Panorama City, 818-892-0892; - Robert Wilkinson Multipurpose Center, 8956 Vanalden Ave. in Northridge, 818-756-7741; and
- Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center, 5056 Van Nuys Blvd., 818-386-9674.
- Baldwin Hills Library, 1906 S. La Brea Ave, Los Angeles, 323-733-1196.
The county added six more cooling centers that will be open from noon
to 6 p.m. The county's cooling centers are located at:
- Joslyn Center, 210 N. Chapel Ave. in Alhambra, 626-570-5056
- Buena Vista Library, 300 N. Buena Vista St. in Burbank; 818-238-5620
- Colonel Leon Washington Park, 8908 South Maie Ave. in South Los Angeles;
- Robinson Park Community Center, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave. in Pasadena;
- El Cariso Community Regional Park, 13100 Hubbard St. in Sylmar; and
- Whittier Community Center, 7630 Washington Ave. in Whittier, 562-567-9430
After the conclusion of the cooling centers' activation hours, the facilities will continue to follow the citywide park closures and restrictions mandated by Safer at Home orders and the county Department of Public Health orders until further notice, Recreation and Parks officials said.
