Crystal Cathedral's ‘Robert II' Removed as ‘Hour of Power' Preacher

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- The Rev. Robert H. Schuller removed his son as the featured speaker on the Crystal Cathedral's "Hour of Power," it was reported Sunday.

Robert A. Schuller, known to congregants as Robert II, was given the reins of the television ministry less than three years ago, but the 82-year-old church founder decided that he and his son had different visions for the church, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The announcement was read Saturday to some 450 congregants by Jim Coleman, the church's president.

"It is no secret to any of you that my son, Robert, and I have been struggling as we each have different ideas as to the direction and the vision for this ministry," the elder Schuller stated. "For this lack of shared vision, and the jeopardy in which this is placing this entire ministry, it has become necessary for Robert and me to part ways."

Guest pastors will fill in while a new preacher is sought. In some markets, the show, which is syndicated worldwide, has been cut to half an hour since summer.

The elder Schuller made it clear he wasn't retiring when he put his son in charge Jan. 22, 2006. The younger Schuller will continue as a senior pastor, though it was unclear if he would continue to preach. In recent months, he disappeared from the television program, replaced by reruns featuring his father.
