A sheriff’s deputy who was shot in San Bernardino on Tuesday, forcing a nearby school to go on lockdown during a search for additional suspects, has been released from the hospital, authorities said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputy was fired upon in the 1400 block of East Date Street (map) just after 10 a.m., according to according to Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller.

The deputy was treated at a hospital and released late Tuesday afternoon.

A gray compact vehicle had pulled up next to and opened fire on a patrol car containing two deputies, Lt. Paul Williams of the San Bernardino Police Department said. Deputies returned fire, he said. A neighbor said he heard about 10 rounds fire during the exchange.

Aerial video showed bullet holes in the patrol car, which also had a shattered window.

"They were ambushed while still sitting in their car waiting to serve an eviction notice," Sheriff's Department Cpl. Randy Naquin said.

The deputy, a 24-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department who was stable and expected to survive, had wounds to his head, arm and hand, Naquin said.

The shooter's vehicle -- also with bullet holes in it -- was found about a 1/4-mile away, Williams said, and a driver fled the scene when authorities resonded. The suspect was taken into custody.

A search was continuing because authorities believed there may be two other people from the car who had escaped.

About 450 students at nearby Hunt Elementary School were placed on lockdown as a precaution and police were searching the campus, Williams said.

“We do have a suspect or suspects outstanding, possibly; we’re not sure. We only believe there’s one at this time, but as you can tell we do have a lockdown still on this school,” Williams said.

San Bernardino police and the Sheriff's Department homicide team were investigating, Miller said.
