A driver went the wrong way on Interstate 10 between Desert Center and Blythe Thursday, causing major traffic disruptions before finally crashing into the center divider, where he was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers.
The driver, whose identity was not immediately released, was encountered going east in the westbound lanes of the four-lane corridor about 11:30 a.m., according to the CHP. The agency said that vehicles came to a halt on the eastbound side of I-10 as the man drove several miles, yelling at passing drivers. No collisions were reported.
The driver apparently lost control of the gold-colored Subaru sedan and slammed into the center divider 10 minutes later. He reportedly ran over to a stopped vehicle and attempted to force his way inside, possibly in a failed carjacking attempt, according to reports from the scene. Officers took him into custody without incident. All lanes were open and moving again by noon.
The Subaru was towed away. The investigation is ongoing.
