Robed Pursuit Suspect Arrested in Parking Lot

The man, wearing a bathrobe, was captured in a parking lot

A motorist who failed to pull over for allegedly speeding near the Grapevine led police on an hours-long chase on several Southland freeways Monday.

The pursuit finally ended at 5:15 p.m. on a surface street in San Dimas after CHP officers used a stun gun then tackled and arrested the male suspect.

The driver stopped his car on West Covina Boulevard and walked and ran for about 100 yards before he was taken into custody.  He was wearing a bathrobe.

The chase started when an officer attempted to stop the driver on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway near the Grapevine about 2 p.m., CHP Officer Krystal Carter said.

The driver got off the freeway in Valencia, drove around, then got back on the 5 and continued south to the Hollywood (170) Freeway.

After nearly an hour, the California Highway Patrol called off the pursuit. According the CHP, the agency knew who the driver was and did not want to endanger anyone by continuing the pursuit.

Initially it was reported the driver was a woman, but later CHP reported the suspect was a man.
Meanwhile, the car -- an older-model green compact -- went from the 605 to the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway and got off in West Covina and pulled into the parking lot of a nearby motel.

After a short time, the driver got back on the eastbound 10 Freeway and continued at a normal speed, followed primarily by television helicopters, and eventually by a pair of motorcycle officers.

By 4 p.m., the motorist had reached the San Bernardino area.
